Facts About The Yorkie Pomeranian
A combination of two extremely popular dog breeds, the Yorkie Pomeranian is a hybrid pet that falls into the small dog category. As is true with any hybrid breed, it is important to do significant research on the pet’s ancestry before bringing it into your home to ensure that it will a compatible pet.
Deciding to bring a dog into the fold of the family is a major consideration. Just as humans are brought together by mutual attraction, dogs should be matched to their human owners by characteristics and traits as well. The choices are many; aggressive dog versus passive, calm personality versus active personality, small dog versus large dog, long hair versus short hair; the list goes on and on. Adopting a pet should be thought of as a lifelong commitment to that animal, and therefore it is crucial that everyone concerned are compatible.
When purchasing a pure breed, much of the guesswork in the compatibility quiz is taken care of for the prospective owners. Generally, pure breed dogs are produced from strong and well documented stock and therefore follow a typical characteristic type. For example, the Cocker Spaniel breed requires a lot of exercise to expend their natural energy, while Maltese are more lap dog breeds. These traits generally run true for all dogs of these breed types. Doing a little bit of research on dog breed personalities, characteristics and traits on pure breeds will narrow your search down substantially in very little time because of these inherited traits.
When a hybrid dog comes into the mix, things become more muddled. Often, disreputable breeders enter the picture in attempts to capitalize on the demand for a particular fad dog breed that has perhaps been seen on a movie or with a celebrity. These unscrupulous overnight “breeders” do not take the time to ensure the heredity of a dog breed; in their rush to make money, they often practice unsafe breeding habits which can result in a dog that is physically or mentally impaired. Even reputable breeders may produce designer dogs that are multi-generation crosses of the two breeds, which produce less than a 50-50 pure breed mix.
The Yorkie Pomeranian hybrid, often referred to as Yoranians or Yorkie Poms, is a hybrid breed that has been very popular. Not surprising, since both the Yorkshire terrier and the Pomeranian are also highly desired as pets. The two breeds have similar personalities. Yorkies are well known for their energetic and curious nature. Since they are small dogs, they don’t require a great deal of exercise. Long, luxurious hair from head to foot does require regular grooming. Pomeranians are extremely personable that love interaction with their family. Also in the small dog category, they do not require a lot of exercise either. Grooming is especially important for the Pomeranian, with a very thick coat that needs a lot of attention.
The two pure breeds together will produce a compatible puppy. Similar in size, personality, energy level and grooming needs, the resulting hybrid breed will be very like their parentage breeds. In appearance, the puppy may resemble one breed more than the other; often, multiple puppies from the same litter can look totally different.
Most important when considering a hybrid is their health. You will also want to see both parents if possible to give you a clue as to the puppy’s future appearance. Ask to see the papers proving the bloodlines of the parents, and ask to see references for the breeder.
Bringing a pet to the family is an important step, and since a dog’s lifespan can be up to 15 years, it is crucial to ensure that your hybrid Yorkie Pomeranian will be a compatible addition.
